Daniel Smolkin

Bio

I am a mathematician and software engineer based in Ann Arbor, MI. I am currently employed at Onto Innovation, where I write high-performance C++ code to do things like spectroscopic ellipsometry and 3D modeling. I am also interested in applications of commutative algebra to fields such as quantum-resistant cryptography and algebraic vision.

Prior to working in industry, I was a researcher focusing on commutative algebra and toric varieties in positive characteristic. I completed my PhD at the University of Utah, followed by post-doc positions at the University of Oklahoma and University of Michigan.

Please feel free to send me an e-mail if any of this sounds interesting, or if you'd like to work together!

Axioms

I cosign Federico Ardilla's four axioms of mathematics:
  1. Mathematical potential is distributed equally among different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.
  2. Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.
  3. Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.
  4. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
